AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- An Augusta commissioner is looking for answers at Tuesday night's commission meeting.

Recently the city had to pay the federal government back $80,000.

Commissioner Marion Williams has some questions for city employees, but some of his colleagues call it old news.

"We're sending money back because we didn't use it. They may say, I guess, Augusta don't need the money. We need those funds," Williams said.

"I guess at this point it's about reprogramming the dollars and putting them back in the transit department." said Mayor Pro Tem Corey Johnson.

It all started two years ago when the city used federal money to replace four bus engines. One part of the bid process did not meet the federal guidelines, and after months of back and forth, the feds wanted their $80,000 back

"When you're dealing with federal guidelines and federal dollars, you have to be specific in how that money will be spent. In this case, it was not specific," Johnson said.

"We don't want the federal government to stop giving us those funds that we get from them," Williams said.

City department heads, along with Mayor Deke Copenhaver, says this issue is two years old and has been dealt with.

"If he's saying it's 2 years old, why didn't he address it then? Why do I have to address it now? It should've been addressed then," Williams said.

Williams is also taking issue with a letter sent to the federal government. It details how city employees thought they were following correct finance policies, and it's signed by ex-commissioner Joe Bowles.

WIlliams doesn't even believe he wrote it and says he plans to find that out at Tuesday night's meeting.
