Augusta, Ga---An Augusta Commissioner tells News 12 his colleagues are not following the rules when it comes to bidding on big projects. City leaders are looking at an $11 million offer from Motorola for a new communications system.

Commissioner Bill Lockett says a contract of that size should go out for competitive bids. "As we begin to explore options, we want to make sure our systems are the best," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

"If the administrator had any questions about this he should've thought about it, before placing it on the agenda," said Commissioner Bill Lockett.

Earlier this year, commissioners voted to send out all contracts above $1 million out for competitive bids. Commissioner Lockett says having a workshop for one company is not fair to others that could possibly offer the same product for less.

"It's giving one particular vendor an advantage. We don't want to do that. We want to be fair and equitable to each and every one," said Commissioner Lockett.

"Well we will know about the system itself," said Commissioner Corey Johnson.

Johnson says they might learn something in a work session while others argue that's procurements job.

"No we're not," said Johnson. As commissioners debate that Sheriff Richard Roundtree says his department's communication system could use the upgrade.
