Augusta commissioners take second look at sanitation contract

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Picking up garbage is a dirty job, but someone's got to do it. Two of the subcontractors for the City of Augusta who want to do the work are not allowed to starting June 1.

Advance Disposal General Manager Kevin Rupinta had no answer following his presentation to commissioners about plans to meet local small business goals.

Assistant Manager James Chance says he knows his job is on the line.

"We just want to work just like they want to work. It's enough houses they're taking in and it should be enough work," Chance said.

It was all about who picked up the stuff you throw away at the committee meeting. Commissioner Marion Williams says he's trying to make sure that doesn't happen with subcontractors Barry Smith and Coleman Sanitation.

"I don't appreciate people shoving stuff down your throat and thinking you're supposed to accept it," Williams said.

"Commissioner Williams is trying to get some answers because the procurement department kept amending and sending things back and forth," Chance said.

The new contractor that goes into effect in June could be putting more than 30 people out of work. Williams grilled other city leaders, saying that since the contract was changed, it should have been sent back out for bid.

"You end up having to go back out to the whole procurement process. I'm not to sure that would be a wise thing at the moment," said City Administrator Fred Russell.

"It's great being in business when times are good. It's tough when times are like they are now. It's a tough deal," Smith said.
