AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- A new rain tax could soon soak Augusta Taxpayers. Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle says folks in his district should get a discount or not pay at all, but others say, not so fast, we're all in this together.

The new storm fee or tax has been in the works for years. Federal and State mandates require Augusta to update it's drainage system, which is more than 100 years old.

When it rains it pours on certain parts of town making it hard for neighbors in the areas.

Consultants will survey those trouble spots, then make recommendations to the commission.

Guilfoyle fears the Engineering Department could just dig ditches in his eighth district, and believes people in the city that have pipes replaced should pay more. Commissioner Donnie Smith disagrees saying some people who don't have kids still pay school board taxes.

"The people who has a ditch should be given a reduced fee or not charge them at all. It's all what's fair and equitable," said Commissioner Wayne Guilfoyle.

"It's just like the road maintenance that we have to do. Everybody pays for road maintenance. You may not live on it, but you drive on it at some point. The food that you eat comes on the road," said Commissioner Donnie Smith.
