We're continuing our investigation into a woman accused of stealing thousands from the city of Augusta. 50 year old Terrilyn Brown faces a felony theft charge and possible jail time if she's convicted.

We're talking about $86,000 in paychecks the city says should have never been paid.

"When tom and his staff contacted us, it was shocking. I want to let you know by what we found out," said Staffing Specialist Robert Kelly. Kelly says Terrilyn Brown worked for his company for more than five years and had no issues.

Kelly says she did administrative work on contracts for the city. "She's a decorated veteran. She worked at Savannah River Site and came with great references. People spoke highly of her," said Kelly.

After 5 years, the city says her job ended, but the paychecks never stopped. "She had a blank time sheet that she would fill out and fax it to them," said Utilities Director Tom Wiedmeier.

All temp employee invoices must be signed by the manager, Department Director, then it's sent to finance to cut a check. In Brown's case, we're told the consultant Paul Nesmith's name was on the time sheets. We're also told an unnamed accountant with the Utilties Department signed the check and the Finance Department paid it out.

"It was a lady here in the department. I'd rather not say her name. She's a very good employee," said Weidmeier.

Augusta Commissioners are calling for a full scale investigation to find out how $86,000 disappeared.

Last month, a janitor found bags of money left unattended in the Utilities Department. We're told the janitor called management and turned it in.

A new checklist has been created before employees in the Water Works Cashier's Office leave. Also now more than one signature is required on invoices for temp employees to be paid.
