Housing Authority board member apologizes

September 4, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.---A Housing Authority board member has apologized for the contents of an email he sent to two local developers.

Dave Barbee sent an email about the planned closing of the Gilbert Manor public housing project to Clay and Braye Boardman. In the email, Barbee wrote about black people leaving downtown Augusta and white people moving into a planned new condominium project. He was worried that would upset the makeup of legislative districts.

Black democrats took offense, and the mayor was also upset. Barbee apologized this morning.

It is really sad that with the financial growth in Augusta, political caucasians are continuing to divide the city. My question: Did Barbee want to move the Blacks near Walmart in South Augusta, to put Caucasians near downtown? I also believe that Andy Cheeks wants the canal on Ellis St. to keep lower income Blacks on one side of the canal, near the Bld.......so, how many Blacks will move into the almost free land given by the mayor, condos? Watch out everyone, they are leaving Columbia County, guiding low income Blacks to South Augusta and the middle class Blacks to Columbia County...Politicians always want Blacks struggle to contain.

I really am sad to sad that this southern climate has this unchange mindset. I'm really am not surprise of what what said, and yes, this is a prime example of stealth racism, from what you call the [good old boys]. This is what I knew all the long, Mr.Barbee just reveal what he has been taught and thinking all along. Should Mr. Barbee be hated, of course, he just need to be expose to more more cultures and broader way of thinking. [Meaning a transformed mind]. Mr. Barbee thinking is that all Caucasian are better than others, and thinking has been handed down from many generations. I'm quite surethat this individual believe in Jesus Christ, and I am very sure there are many more like him who's thinking are on the same lines. By the way, I am very glad that an individual of color had the courage to speak up concerning this statement, and to read that is a woman, doesn't surprise me, because Since I have been here in this southern part of this country, the black men lack it.

Mr. Barbee email is actually what white Augustans feel. I am sure his white buddies took him out for a steak dinner. His email only spoke what most of his white friends were thinking.

In reference to Mr. Dave Barbee, and being an elder citizen, we knew this all the time, but Mr Barbee brought it out in an e-mail. When will the prejudice stop?
