Whitehead decides against recount

July 24, 2007

AUGUSTA---Jim Whitehead said in a statement Tuesday afternoon that he would not request a recount in the 10th District special election runoff to fill the late Charlie Norwood's seat in Congress.

Paul Broun defeated Whitehead by a margin of 394 votes.

Whitehead's full statement follows.

(Augusta , GA) – State Senator Jim Whitehead today declined to request a recount of last week's special election runoff vote for the vacant 10 th Congressional District Seat.

After learning today that a recount could conceivably take as long as a week, Whitehead decided to let the results of yesterday's vote certification by Georgia's Secretary of State to stand.

"The people of this district have been without a federal representative since February, and that's long enough," said Whitehead. "If this recount could be done quickly to make sure the results are correct it would be worth it, but to even take an outside chance we could drag this election out another week is unjustifiable in light of the time we have gone without a vote in Congress. For the good of the people of this district I will let the results stand and allow us to regain our vote in the House immediately."
