Runoff results too close to call

News 12 at 11 o'clock, July 17, 2007

AUGUSTA, Ga.---The race for Congress is so close, the candidates themselves are not ready to claim victory or defeat.

Here's a look at the numbers from the Associated Press. Paul Broun has 23,514 votes to Jim Whitehead's 23,120. That's a difference of 394 votes, which triggers an automatic recount.

Lots of Jim Whitehead supporters turned out in downtown Augusta to watch the numbers come in. People were glued to their laptops watching the vote totals from across the district.

And early on, you could read the concern on their faces as the numbers flashed on the big screen.

Finally, just before 10 o'clock, Whitehead came out and told his supporters it was too close to call.

In the end, Jim Whitehead was only able to get about 973 votes in the Athens area. His opponent was able to generate 4799 in the Augusta area.

Kiss the Medical Colege, VA hospital, Fort Gordon, Bomb Plant,Dental School's repersentives in Washington goodby. Say hello to a declining city with politics more like a getto. Ga.now has no one from Augusta to look after our assets and two oposing political pundits from Athens to look after the once second largest city in Ga.. You do the math. Shame on the citizens of this area to let this transpire.
