AUGUSTA, Ga.---Presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani was in Augusta today, and while he was here he decided to pay a visit to firefighters to say thank you for Augusta's part in New York's recovery after 9/11.

The former New York mayor looked right at home in Augusta's Engine Company No. 1. He shook hands and publicly thanked firefighters who helped raise money in the days after 9/11.

"They came at the worst time in our city's history," Giuliani said. "The cash was important, but the spirit of being there was important. And so I'm here to say thank you."

News 12 went along for the delivery of the $1 million check Augustans helped raise in New York's time of crisis.

The money from Augusta was the first to be delivered and was part of $220 million raised for rescue workers and their families.

Although this was not a campaign stop, Giuliani couldn't help but talk politics, and about iraq.

"I'm very concerned about the retreat Congress voted for," he said. "I've never heard of it. We're giving our enemies a schedule of our retreat."

Giuliani was in town visiting with former Augusta mayor Bob Young. It was his first trip South since announcing his candidacy for president.

From Augusta, Mr. Giuliani went to Atlanta. He met with soldiers about to deploy for Iraq at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and called the experience "moving."

Giuliani was also scheduled to meet privately with Gov. Perdue before headlining a fundraiser in the Atlanta neighborhood of bulkhead, hosted by Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus.

Along the way, reporters asked questions about whether Georgia should apologize for slavery, and about the Confederate flag.

Giuliani said states should decide that for themselves.
