AUGUSTA, Ga.---Augusta is considering renting ad space on city buses after learning it's been a moneymaker for other cities our size.

"You're always going to run into whether people like the advertising or not," public transit director Heyward Johnson told News 12. Johnson is researching just how much money bus advertising could make.

To get a better idea of the possible revenue, Augusta is looking at its success in other, similar sized cities, like Savannah and Columbus. It could mean up to $75,000 more a year.

"If it adds revenue--and we seem to be in a budget crunch right now--I don't think it would hurt anything," Johnson said.

Some worry the ads would be in poor taste, like a lot of what you might see flipping the pages of magazines. However, Johnson is confident commissioners wouldn't approve those.

"There is a clause in there about no alcohol, no tobacco, nothing which is basically illegal," he said.

But before buses can begin carrying the extra weight, a complete proposal must be submitted to try and convince commissioners to buy into the idea.

Johnson has been working on one for a week. He hopes to have his proposal ready by the end of next month, at which point commissioners will decide whether or not to move forward.

Company bids will be included in Johnson's proposal. They'll give us an idea of which companies would be interested in taking advantage of this.
