AUGUSTA, Ga.---Augusta Commissioner Calvin Holland says old dumpy buildings in his district have been an eyesore for too long. Now he's personally taking on violators.

Commissioner Holland says this shouldn't be a surprise. It was one of the things he told voters he would do when he ran for office.

He says it's homes like this that make the District 5 community look bad and turn off potential investors.

"We're going to call it Operation Cleanup," he said. "We want to make our community safe and look good."

To make it happen, he's personally warning his constituents who aren't keeping up their property or who have old cars just sitting in the yard to clean up...or he will report you.

And he's already done it.

One consequence of not complying is that your property is torn down.

"We've taken care of about four houses," Holland said. "We're also working on a couple more houses right off Wheeless Road."

Holland says violators get a warning to clean up first, then a visit from the marshal's and license and inspection office. If residents still don't comply, it's time for the bulldozers.

Homeowner William Sullivan isn't complaining.

For 40 years, he's had an all too close view of a dilapidated home when standing on his porch.

"It's an eyesore to the area where you are living," he said.

William's happy his commissioner is making a move to hold property owners responsible.

"I think when people see we have taken these down, that they know we're serious about what we're doing," Holland said.

Many property owners are hard to get in contact with.

If you want to report code enforcement violations, you can call the marshal's office at 821-2555 or license and inspection department at 706-312-5050. You can read Augusta's building codes here.
