A Richmond County school board race is drawing lots of attention.

The Super District 9 seat is currently held by A.K. Hasan.

The winner of the race will represent half the county.

He's one of the most outspoken school board members.

51-year-old A.K. Hasan is running once again to fill the District 9 seat, the same seat he won in a special election last November.

What a year it's been, with new school construction and perhaps the most political of issues: the early retirement of former school superintendent Dr. Charles Larke.

"The community indicated last year that they wanted a change," Hasan said. "I've been a part of that change. We are in a transition. I am the only one in this race that has experience."

Even so, opponents say they can do the job just as good.

Super District 9 is the most crowded of the school board races. The four candidates vying for the seat all say there's a lot of work to be done.

50-year-old Venus Cain is an Army veteran and former member of the Augusta Aviation Commission.

"I'm running because I want to make a difference," she said. "I'm concerned about the amount of children we have on the streets each and every day that are no longer in school."

61-year-old James Williams, Jr. is a graduate of Laney High School. He's a local property manager and minister.

"I do have safety as a concern of mine, with the escalation of the intrusion of schools, with the recent things that happened across the country," he said.

And 41-year-old Winsome Wellington is a mother and a grandmother.

"Special Ed children, which I would like to address. I would also like to address the parents that have concern about the CRCT tests," she said.

The District 3 and District 6 seats are also up for grabs.

In the running for District 3 are Alex Howard and Lauretta Gordon, and for District 6, Robert Ingham and Jack Padgett, Jr.
