Some say Augusta's new sanitation contract stinks

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Some say Augusta's new sanitation contract is a bunch of garbage. It goes into effect June 1 and that's when more than 30 people could be out of jobs.

Commissioners are now worried about your trash service. Some say the city's new trash contract stinks.

"Slighted, slighted, slighted, and I feel left out," said Route Supervisor James Chance.

He is a route supervisor for Barry Smith Sanitation. His company has been disposing of what others throw away for years, but the end could be near.

"There's nothing actually for us as of June 1st. We all are going to have to look for other jobs," Chance said.

We're told Coleman Sanitation could also be laying off employees. It's all because both subcontractors are left out of the new sanitation contract.

"I wouldn't say it's less jobs, I would say that those jobs are in other organizations," said Environmental Services Director Mark Johnson.

"It's a sticky situation because the contract has already been approved. There could be some other things that we might be subjected to," said Commissioner Corey Johnson.

Right now there are four subcontractors picking up trash in Augusta-Richmond County. The new contract gets rid of two but expands the coverage area.

While Director Johnson says service will not be affected, it's still an issue for some commissioners.

"I think it will cause a problem. I don't know whether or not these subs can handle that much of a workload that's required, especially the magnitude off homes that will be covered," Commissioner Johnson said.

Chance and his employees are praying that the contract is changed.

However, instead of picking up your trash, they're planning to pick up their unemployment checks.
