AUGUSTA, Ga.---Former Richmond County Republican Party Chairman Dave Barbee won't be joining the County Board of Health. He was also a former member of the Augusta Housing Authority Board who resigned after a controversial e-mail was made public in 2007.

Tuesday, the City Commission voted 6 to 2 in favor of his appointment to the Board. Mayor Pro Tem Betty Beard abstained.

Then Commissioner J.R. Hatney said he was having problems with his electronic voting device and actually meant to abstain.

A second vote was taken, and Barbee's nomination failed, 5-2 with Beard and Hatney abstaining. Six affirmative votes are required for Commission approval.

Commissioner Jerry Brigham had nominated Barbee. He also nominated
Rosa Clemons to serve on the Board of Health, and her nomination was
approved.
