Augusta, GA---Two new faces are heading to the Augusta commission. News 12 caught up with both of the winning candidates.

"The people have spoken, and I am just so grateful that they see that we need a change," said Alvin Mason, who beat the incumbent, Bernard Harper, in District 4. If you can believe it, there was one precinct where only one person voted. But the Mason camp is not complaining; they are celebrating.

"I am so proud, and the fact that I turned 75 and am able to see my son in the government...I know he will do a fantastic job, and I just hope I live long enough to see the good work that he's going to do," Mason's mother said.

"I am disappointed, but I feel good," says District 2 candidate Freddie Handy. Corey Johnson will replace outgoing Commissioner Marion Williams. Johnson beat out political veteran Handy by 68 votes. "I congratulate Corey Johnson Sr. He ran a good race, but someone has to lose and someone has to win, and we know what the results are."

"This is what the people are looking for. They want some fresh young innovative people that's gonna come in there that's not gonna bring they baggage to the table and implement something that's gonna make Augusta a progressive city," Johnson said.

The runoff results mean there will be two new faces on the Commission. "It means a lot," Johnson said. "It means the people saw the passion that I have for the city of Augusta and also the people in District 2."

"I'm prepared," Mason said. "I'm ready. I think they heard me when I said we can no longer sit down while Augusta shuts down. We have to stand up so Augusta can stand out. The people of District 4 stoop up tonight so that Augusta can standout . I'm prepared to do what I can to help move this city forward." is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion.
