Augusta, Ga (WRDW)---- The fair is usually about fun rides and good food, but some living nearby say parking has been a headache.
"We were forced to not park in front of our own door," said Sharon Hartfield
Hartfield lives at the Hale Street Apartments. She says a deal her landlord made with Bobby Hardwick and his company to charge fair goers for parking spots isn't fair
"It's just not right. It's not right for us to have to be forced to park somewhere else and we pay rent here. We pay rent and we pay rent on time it's not right," she told News12.
The landlord wouldn't talk to us on camera but says there's plenty of parking. He says 35 people live there and only 10 have cars. Hartfield says an event earlier this year caused similar parking problems, but now she's speaking up.
"I just got out of the hospital one week ago Friday," said Hartfield.
She says the extra steps make her trip from the car to her door harder than it should be.
"We are forced to go all the way down and around when we probably going right there to the corner and it's not right," Hartfield told News12.
That's what she told us Sunday and the original agreement signed by the landlord gives the contractor virtually all the space in front of 3 of the 5 buildings. That's what News12 found blocked off when we first visited Hale Street Apartments, but a day after our visit, the bright orange fencing was moved. Sharon Hartfield says she's now able to park in front of her apartment.
"He just did it because y'all came out here. Had no one come out and stood up for us--nobody else would've either," she told News12.
Again, neither the landlord or Bobby Hardwick who's renting the space to fair goers for parking wanted to be interviewed on camera. The landlord, however, did tell News12 this is the last year he'll rent out his parking lot.
