AIKEN, S.C. -- SCE&G sent out a news release Wednesday alerting customers in Aiken of a possible telephone scam.
The scam involves people posing as South Carolina Electric & Gas Company employees, asking for customers' bills. The person then threatens immediate service disconnection if the customer cannot make the payment.
The release from SCE&G says the company never calls customers demanding payments.
SCE&G released the following information:
"Bill payments are only accepted at SCE&G business offices, by mail, online or through SCE&G's phone payment provider, BillMatrix, by calling 1-800-450-9160.
If someone calls and introduces themselves as an SCE&G employee, the company recommends calling Customer Service at 1-800-251-7234 for verification or dialing 911 if they feel threatened."
SCE&G advises customers to call if they have any concerns about their accounts and to contact local law enforcement if they are contacted by these scam artists.
