NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- As soon as we hear bad winter weather is on the way-- people hit the grocery store.
"We stocked up. Yea, we got a lot of food. Chicken, rice, I mean everything," said Aaron Burke.
If you're like Burke you probably did the same thing, but when the ice comes--the power lines come down.
"The lights been out for two or three days now," Burke told News12.
"The best idea is to not open the refrigerator very often," said Kim Beavers.
Beavers knows a lot about the kitchen. The host of Eating Well with Kim says fridge thermometers help you see if you're at the perfect temp of 40 degrees, but if you don't have one the outside fridge can help.
"It's going to be freezing or below 40 outside get a cooler put some ice in it and put it outside. That's what we did to salvage some of our milk for this morning," said Beavers.
And when you have small kids at home like Burke does milk is important.
"We got the liquid milk, but that spoiled too. Now we have to get the powder milk," said Burke.
There are a couple of ways to tell what's okay to eat.
"How I found out that it spoiled-- it had an odor. A real bad odor in my house," Burke told News12.
And while using your nose is one sign--Beavers says don't just go by that.
"For milk certainly that's the case, but not always are you going to be able to tell just by looking at something or smelling it. So, it's a good idea to not throw caution to the wind here," she told News12.
So, while Burke now has some food to keep his family full-- he only has one more prayer --and that's for power and hot water.
"I don't want to go to work smelling like the food that's spoiled in the refrigerator,"
