AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A veteran wants answers after he says his personal information may have been compromised by a former Charles Norwood VA Medical Center employee.
Tom Sauls is angry. Very angry.
"They do not let us know nothing," the former Airman said.
Sauls leaned his personal information may have been compromised by watching News 12.
Sauls is one of the more than 800 veterans at the Charles Norwood VA Medical Center who may have had their personal information compromised.
Officials say it happened in March when a former physician's resident's personal laptop was stolen. The former employee had violated policy years before by downloading patient information on it.
"We are victims. I've been a victim once already," Sauls said.
Someone stole Saul's identity several years ago. Now he worries it could happen again.
"If this happened in 2009, why is it coming to light now?" he asked.
Sauls doesn't understand why VA officials did not tell veterans their account information may have been comprised when the former employee first took their information in 2009.
News 12 On Your Side requested an interview with VA officials, but they responded through email that they could not accommodate the request.
Officials say the former employee's actions were not in keeping with policy and standards but are not criminal. They say he left in 2009 but could not comment further due to privacy laws. They also say there is no indication any patient information has been misused.
The VA is offering veterans free credit monitoring for a year.
"From a vet's standpoint? Be honest with us. Talk to us. Don't send a letter saying we get free credit counseling," Sauls said.
He says he understands things happen, but he wishes the VA would talk more with him about it.
