AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Garden City ranks as fourth worst-paying city for women, according to 24/7 Wall Street.

Women's rights advocates say the score is results of the industries in town and the attitudes of the fairer sex.

"I wouldn't say it surprises me. I say it has to do with where we are located," Elaine Clark-Smith said.

The women's rights advocate says top industries like health care, manufacturing and military in Augusta attract more men.

"Traditionally and typically, those businesses have always paid lower wages to women because mainly men have most of the top management jobs," she said.

According to the study, the median income for men in Augusta is at $46,648. For women, the median income is $32,926. That means women only make 70.6 percent of what men make in the area.

Clark-Smith says all the blame doesn't fall on the male-dominated career fields in Augusta.

"Women need to learn to negotiate. I think one of the reasons women's salaries are lower is that women tend to accept what they are offered," she said.

She says the three most important tools for women to become successful is to assertive, confident and learn your value.
