AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Richmond County deputies are on the hunt for a sneaky scam artist with a string of recent victims downtown.
Sgt. Jimmy Young says Eva Smith has preyed on at least two people so far. They say she claims she locked her keys in her truck and needs money for a locksmith. They say she wins your trust by calling her brother or father that is a police officer with your phone.
Denise Stewart said Smith is very convincing.
"She tells you she is pregnant with twins," Stewart said.
Smith approached Stewart in her vehicle at a stop sign and told her she had locked her keys in her truck. Stewart gave her a ride to her truck to make sure it was still parked in the same place. Smith asked her for $30 to get someone to unlock her vehicle.
Stewart says she believed the scam artist when she supposedly called her brother in law enforcement.
"OK, she knows someone at the police department. It's a trust thing," she said.
Investigators warn that Smith has been pulling this scam on folks for years. Recently, they say, she's returned to her old ways by preying on the kind heartiness of strangers.
Stewart says she gave Smith the $30. Smith in turn said her brother, the "officer," would pay her back. In a twist, Smith added her brother was going to give Stewart an interview at the Sheriff's Office.
"Yes, I was dressed and ready for an interview and come to find out, she's been doing to quite a few people," Smith said. "I don't want to trust anybody right now and its kinda hard."
Investigators say Smith is not dangerous but is very sneaky. If you spot her, call your local law enforcement.
