AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A celebration is on at a local apartment complex after neighbors talked trash to News 12 On Your Side.
For nearly a month, neighbors at Cedar Woods Apartments have been living next to ever-growing mountains of filth.
"Ugh. I don't have a word for it," said Karen Hyman, pointing toward a massive pile of trash out side of her apartment. "Look at it! It looks like a landfill."
Hyman says she and her neighbors have been without trash pickup for three weeks. She says it's causing all sorts of problems.
Hyman says the bugs and smell is what makes her stomach turn.
"A maggot. That did it for me," she said.
Other neighbors complain about the rats.
"The rats, they are big as cats," one said.
Neighbors suspected a recent change in apartment management companies was part of the trash problem. News 12 On Your Side confirmed the old apartment complex management company did not pay waste management. A new company took over a a month ago. Still, the mountain of filth kept on growing.
"They told us to just bear with them. I called Channel 12," Hyman said.
News 12 On Your Side was not at the apartment complex more than an hour when waste management pulled up.
"That's victory dance! Yes! Thank you, thank you, thank you, Channel 12. Thank you," said Hyman while jumping up and down.
Marshals did cite the new owners of the complex two days ago. The manager of the building told us she had been working before that to resolve the trash problem.
