AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The Better Business Bureau of the CSRA is warning consumers about someone posing as a representative of the Augusta Jaycees to collect donations.

Carroll Proctor is a local business owner and is accustomed to taking calls from organizations asking for donations.

"We get them all the time. This one was unusual," he said.

The call was unusual because the person over the phone identified herself with a group Proctor knows very well.

"Being a past president of the Augusta Jaycees, we used to have problems with people using our name fraudulently," he said.

The woman on the phone claimed to be selling ad space for the Augusta Jaycees. However, as the former chapter president, he knew that was impossible.

"There is no longer a Jaycees chapter in Richmond or Columbia, so I knew the phone call was fraud," Proctor said.

The Augusta chapter of the Jaycees closed several years ago.

Proctor ended the conversation after telling the woman on the phone that he knew there wasn't a chapter here and that she was a fake.

"It's raising money pretty much to line someone else's pocket and not help charitable organizations," he said.

Proctor didn't fall for the scam but worries others may and local charities could suffer.

News 12's Liz Owens contacted the Georgia Jaycees. A spokesperson urges concerned citizens to contact the Georgia Jaycees if they believe someone is impersonating the organization.
