12 On Your Side: County workers find missing grave

News 12 at 6 o'clock / Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- An Augusta woman feels more at peace now that she knows exactly where her great-grandmother is laid to rest.

Sherri Joyner was shocked to see state of the old pauper's section of Westview Cemetery.

"When I left here, I was crying," Joyner said.

She was even more upset when she realized her great-grandmother's grave was missing.

"She is just thrown away, it seems like," Joyner said.

Two weeks ago, she showed News 12 On Your Side where her great-grandmother was supposed to be laid to rest.

County officials promised they would help locate the grave and clean up the mess.

They kept their word.

"It looks a whole lot better. When you did your story before, there was a tree there. I mean all this dirt, piles of leaves, and it really looks a whole lot better," Joyner said.

Not only is the pauper's section of Westview clear of the overgrowth, but county workers also located Joyner's great-grandmother's grave.

"She was under dirt, and we couldn't find her," Joyner said.

Joyner has already put a wreath above her loved one's grave.

"It made me feel so good to know that there are people that can help us and that care," Joyner said.
