12 On Your Side: Buying refurbished electronics

News 12 at 6 o'clock / Monday, Dec. 10

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- A mother buys her daughter her dream Christmas gift only to find later it was used.

There is still one gift missing under the Edwards' tree.

"She's been asking for the past two years now," Deiadra Edwards said.

All her daughter wants for Christmas is an iPad.

"I looked around to do some pricing," Edwards said. "I found GameStop to have the cheapest price."

Edwards found the iPad 2 for $390 at GameStop. Everywhere else sells it for $399.

"The guy told me he would have to order one since they don't keep them in the store and I thought okay this will be fine," Edwards said.

However, she wasn't fine after she paid and looked at the receipt.

"As I looked at the receipt, it said it was refurbished and I'm thinking, refurbished? I wouldn't dare pay $390 for a refurbished versus a new iPad that I could get for $399 and could just take out with me," she said.

Edwards claims the clerk never told her she was ordering a used iPad.

"Me being the customer, I should have had the say-so to whether or not I got a refurbished versus a new," she said.

Edwards now wants more than her Christmas spirit back.

"I was told I couldn't get any money back," she said.

News 12 On Your Side contacted GameStop corporate. A spokesperson told us they only sell refurbished Apple products in their stores. She also said there was a possible miscommunication between Edwards and the manager. However, after our call, the spokesperson told us they would grant Edwards a refund.

If you are buying an Apple product this holiday season, keep in mind that Apple requires all stores to sell their products at the same price.
It is a good indicator the product is used if it is on "sale."

Shop at stores that offer gift cards with the purchase of an Apple product to get the best deal.
