COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. (WRDW) -- Trelon Baker, 20, is in jail after his connection with a shooting at a Columbia County apartment complex.

Deputies say Baker demanded cash and jewelry from someone at the Westwood Club Apartments off Washington Road. The shooting is the second violent crime to hit a local apartment complex in the last 24 hours.

In the darkness of night deputies say four people tried to rob a man at gun point and shot him just feet from his apartment off Washington Road.

"I couldn't believe it. I really couldn't. I was like are your serious? This is too close for home to me," said Sarah Richardson.

Richardson says security is important where she lives and not just for her sake

"I have two little ones running around so that's all I've thought about," she told News 12.

Duane Wright has more than two decades of working at apartment complexes. He says to be safe pick up the phone before locking yourself into a lease.

"Call the police department and ask them for the history of that area," he suggested.

Wright said gates and cameras also help, but apartments with an extra feature are usually the safest.

"Courtesy officers on the property means always a police presence," Wright said.

However, he admits crime has no schedule and can strike at any time or any place.

"You can move into a bad neighborhood in a house just as easy as you could into an apartment," Wright said.

Getting to know the people who live in your complex is another safety tip. Something Richardson is taking seriously after a crime close to home.
