Audit: 134 vets waiting on appointment at Charlie Norwood VA

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- More than 130 newly enrolled veterans requested an appointment in the last 10 years and have yet to be scheduled as of June 2, the Department of Veterans Affairs audit shows.

Nationwide, there are more than 57,000 veterans who are waiting to be scheduled for care and another 63,869 who over the past 10 years have enrolled and have not been seen for an appointment, the VA said.

As of May 15, an audit shows there are 39,116 scheduled appointments at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, not including surgery and procedures. There are more than 6 million scheduled nationwide.

Ninety eight percent, or 38,313, of appointments were scheduled in under 90 days. A little more than 800 appointments, or two percent, were scheduled later than 30 days after created by a new patient.

In the Electronic Wait List, three new patients, who have not asked for an appointment in the last two years, cannot be seen within their promised 90 days.

The average wait time for a new patient at the Augusta VA hospital is 29 days, the audit shows. The average wait time for an established patient is two days. When it comes to specialty care, those numbers are 56 days and four days, respectively. For mental health care, the numbers are 45 days and less than one day, respectively.

Overall, 81 percent of the sites, including Augusta, from the 216 visited "require further review," the audit shows.
