AUGUSTA, Ga. -- The fall season is upon us, and it's the perfect time to check that your home is ready for winter.

Roofing experts say you need to have your roof inspected in the fall before winter starts. The inspection can help identify potential signs that could lead to a major problem.

Make sure to clean your gutters and downsprouts late in the fall because leaves can hold water, which can later turn into ice.

Also make sure to check the seals around your windows and doors.

The most important thing on your fall checklist, though, is your furnace.

"Taking care of your furnace is the most important thing you can do in the wintertime. What we hear from heating and cooling contractors is that the most common reason for emergency calls is because the furnace wasn't properly maintained. Investing in a checkup this fall costs anywhere from 60 and hundred and it's money well spent," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.

Don't forget to check your furnace filters each month and replace if necessary.

Checking all these off your to-do list can increase your home's energy efficiency, thus saving you money this winter.
