AUGUSTA, Ga. -- We all know we are supposed to tip servers and cab drivers, but what about plumbers and movers? To tip or not to tip ... that is the question!

In the home services trades, tipping isn't a given as it is in the restaurant and salon trades. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't leave a tip.

The most commonly tipped service professionals include movers, haulers, house cleaners and pet sitters. Contractors like plumbers and roofers rarely receive gratuities.

When tradespeople do get a tip, cash is the most common gratuity, followed by food or drink.

But keep in mind, some may not be allowed to accept it.

"Unfortunately, there is no hard or fast rule about whether a company won't accept tips. Your best bet is to go straight to the boss and ask whether the company allows it. That way you're not putting the workers in an awkward position," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.

So how much should you tip? Take into consideration the quality of service and how long you used the company. Typically though, tipping is less than 20 percent of the job.

If you're tight on money but still want to do something special for the workers, consider writing their boss a letter of praise. It's a nice way to show your gratitude!
