AUGUSTA, Ga. -- This time next week some of us will be sitting down around the table giving thanks with our families. But before you hit the road for Thanksgiving weekend, you need to make sure your car is in tip-top shape.

Nothing puts the brakes on your holiday plans like your vehicle breaking down.

One of the most important things you must maintain is your brakes. If you hear squealing, it's a good indicator your brakes need to be replaced. Grinding means your pads may be beyond their wear limit.

Loss of pressure on the brake pedal can mean a number of things, including a failing brake system.

The point is that you never want to cut corners when it comes to your brakes.

"Brakes are one of the most important functionality of the car and we don't want to ignore them because it can be a very big issue. If you start hearing noises with your brakes, have it checked out right away. It's not a repair you want to put off. In fact, you should probably have your brakes checked over every six months just as a precaution," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.

Regardless of the vehicle, brakes generally need to be replaced every 20 to 30,000 miles. Don't wait until noises develop or become significantly louder.

Don't procrastinate before hitting the road to get your brakes checked. Add that on your to-do list this weekend if you plan to travel next week!
