Angie's List: Garage door inspections

Thursday, Oct. 11, 2012

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- You know when your car is due for a tuneup, but what about your garage door? Just like your vehicle, garage doors need inspections, too.

You probably don't think much about your garage door until it won't open.

Garage doors can weigh hundreds of pounds and are used almost daily, meaning parts eventually wear out. A routine inspection can help keep it running smoothly, and more importantly, safely.

Typically an inspection costs between $80 and $100, which includes a tuneup.

If you're a parent or a pet owner, you especially need to make time for one.

"A garage door inspection should be done regularly. It will include things like checking the springs, lubricating the door and also checking the little sensors that send the door back up if something is in the way. This is really important if you have children or pets," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.

Don't forget: A well-running and good-looking garage door also adds curb appeal, thus upping the value of your home.

If your garage door is cracking or warping, it could mean it's beyond repair, and it's time to consider replacing it.
