AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Summer storms can cause some big problems for homeowners, especially if they have trees in their yards.

Poorly-maintained trees die before their time and create safety hazards for your family. Every so often, you'll want to inspect the trees in your yard to make sure they're healthy.

You want to look for insect infestation and disease, as well as lightning strikes. Also, too much mulch around the base of the tree can cause problems.

Don't procrastinate if the tree appears to be dying or dead. Waiting to have it removed could cost you more money if it happens to fall.

"Trees need check-ups like people do. Having a certified arborist come and exam your trees annually can help you prevent potential problems, catch disease early and protect your landscape," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.

The cost for tree removal is determined by several factors, including size and location. Keep in mind, stump removal is often a separate cost.

As with hiring anyone, check their license and proof of insurance first and get everything in writing.
