AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Planning on a few home remodeling projects before the holidays? A lot of people do.

One of the biggest aggravations is project delays, but with some planning, you can avoid pushing back a deadline.

The key to avoiding delays is careful planning and communication with a contractor before the project. You'll also want to avoid changing plans mid-project. Even small changes can magnify delays, so be sure you create a detailed plan before you start.

You'll also want to hire a contractor that is up to date on codes. Inspections are necessary for almost any construction project and failing it can leads to huge costs and delays.

Finally, don't forget to budget time for uncontrollable events.

"No one can control the weather, but if you're planning for an outside project, it's going to be important to build in some buffer for weather related-delays. If you're painting your house or adding new landscaping, there may be times when they are not able to work.That will help manage expectations by building the buffer so your project comes in on time," said Angie Hicks of Angie's List.

Don't forget about planning projects. Ask your contractor what days he or she will not be working ahead of time.

The key to avoiding delays is to document and communicate with your contractor and make sure you are realistic at the beginning about the timeline.
