AIKEN COUNTY, S.C. -- News 12 is on your side with a warning about a fake charity that's being used to scam generous donors like you.

Aiken County deputies say a man called an elderly woman and told her he was with a charitable organization raising money to feed children. He said all she needed to do was send a money order for $150 and she would be credited $900 on the credit card she used to buy the money order.

The 60-year-old woman did just that, only to learn later that she had been swindled.

The Better Business Bureau warns folks wanting to donate during the holidays to make sure the charities are legitimate before giving. Also find out what percentage of your donation actually goes to help those in need.
