AUGUSTA--Many of you are probably starting to get your electric bills from those really hot days about a month ago and chances are they are through the roof.

But there may be some help out there for your expensive bills.

There are some folks out there who have to choose between putting food on the table and paying their energy bill.

The Georgia Department of Human Resources is trying to make those folks lives a little easier.

Ethel Williams has always had a lot of faith, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have trying times. "I'm on a fixed income with no other help but mine," she said.

That fixed income doesn't change even when the amounts on her energy bill do. But lucky for her, over the past few years, she's been able to get by, thanks to the Georgia Department of Human Resources.

"It really has helped me a great deal," Williams says.

That help has come in the form of $250 she's received for many years, which goes towards her energy bill.

Ethel is one of thousands of people Georgia D.H.R. helps out every year with its Energy Bill Assistance Program.

It's a program that shares $6.4 million dollars of federal money among those who need it.

With those recent scorching temperatures, the need is great right now.

"We've got seniors and they're juggling, should I pay the utility bill or should I buy medicine. That's a weighing on a lot of our seniors," Community Action Agency's Patricia Johnson said.

That's a decision Ethel has come close to having to make, but thankfully, she doesn't have to. "If it hadn't been for them, I don't know how I would have made it," she said.

You can call 706-722-7877 for more information. The program begins October 1st. That's the first day you'll be able to make an appointment.

The program is also available in South Carolina. Call your local Community Action Agency for more information.
