It's been around for years now, but people still have questions about a list that's designed to keep telemarketers off your phone.

The Do Not Call List came to life to protect consumers from those annoying telemarketing calls.

Many of you have registered for it since it was unveiled in 2003, but you may still be confused by some of the rules with it.

That's because you may still be getting some calls from telemarketers because there are some exceptions to the rules.

First off, calls from not-for-profits and charities are exempt, and that's even if they hire a "for profit" company to make the calls.

Also exempt: any business you have a professional relationship with, which can be any place you've made a purchase from in the past 18 months.

And companies conducting surveys can still call too.

You can register your cell phone, but the FTC says you shouldn't need to because companies aren't allowed to mass-dial cell phones without permission.

To register your phone with the Do Not Call List, just go to https://www.donotcall.gov/default.aspx.
