On Your Side: Dashboard Dangers

All over the country, people who own certain types of 2001 Chrysler vehicles are complaining of a serious defect in their cars and trucks, cracking dashboards.

A cracked dashboard can lead to all sorts of problems and it can end up being a huge safety hazard.

The owners want it fixed, but so far, Chrysler is saying it's essentially the owner's problem to correct.

Kathleen Gibson hasn't been too happy lately.

"I'm pretty mad." she said.

You'd probably be mad too if you found that your fairly new car has a major defect.

"My dash is cracked from the windshield to the gauges." Kathleen said.

Thomas Hardin is having the same problem with his truck except his cracks have turned into a big hole.

"It's real frustrating, but the main part is it's really embarrassing to drive around with a hole in your dash." Thomas said.

That's not the only thing Thomas and Kathleen have in common. They also both own 2001 Chrysler built vehicles.

And they aren't alone. If the internet is any indication, this problem is spread a lot further than the Augusta area.

A quick search found similar complaints from Florida, Connecticut, Alabama and Pennsylvania.

The one common denominator is the vehicles were all made in 2001.

The cracks aren't only cosmetic either. The dashboard hides and protects a lot of your car's wiring. If it gets melted or even wet, that could big a huge safety hazard. Your lights may not turn on or there could be a fire.

That's something Kathleen doesn't want to deal with.

"I paid a lot of money for this car. It shouldn't fall apart." Kathleen said.

12 On Your Side called Chrysler about this problem.

The company has only offered to pay for half of Kathleen's repair costs, but Thomas hasn't been offered anything.

If this is happening to you, please go to http://www.safercar.gov/ to log your complaint.

You can also send an email to jeff.anderson@wrdw.com with details and photos of your problem

I have a 1999 300 M Chrysler. Dash cracked like many others before. This is what Mr. Chrysler has turned into. They better hope if I am in an auto accident due to flying dashboard material (if I live)there commercial liability insurance is paid up because cause and effect due to known product defects and a good attorney may just may figure out a way to go back on the Chrysler. No prudent and responsible company would or should treat their existing clients and prospect clients this way. Ago old saying....Rights right and wrong is nobody. Mr Chrysler...you in my opinion are nobody.

I have a '99 Ram. I bought the truck used and it came with a carpet cover on the dash because the real dash had just completely fell to pieces. I got a new dash and installed it and in just a little over a month, a crack showed up in it, then two, etc., and now the new dash is even worse than the old one was so I'm back to the ugly imbarrassing carpet cover. Also, the dash bezel was cracked, so I got a new one of those, and it cracked too. This is rediculous...

I, too, have a Chrysler product with a VERY cracked dashboard. It's a 2000 1500 Dodge Ram. I was amazed when I searched the 'net for similar problems. I took the cheap way out and found a formed dash mat that fits very well.

It's unfortunate that all of us have experienced the same defect in the Chrysler product and still till this day they will not stand by their product. These are the reasons why the foreign trucks will be narrowing the gap on sales. I like my 2001 Dodge Ram Diesel but I am sick of the run around from them. I highly doubt I will be a repeat buyer. I have heard of no class action suits out there but if someone has, please fill the rest of us in.

My trucks dash has all kinds of cracks and a hole about 6" in diameter. The vin plate is falling off of the thing (If the vin plate is removed, it can be considered a Crime) Dodge has to do something about this.
