Identity theft is happening more and more these days and you can never be too prepared when it comes to protecting yourself from it.

The Aiken Regional Medical Center's Senior Wellness group gets together regularly to learn about all kinds of issues that can affect them.

But today, they learned about something that they all need to be aware of and prepared for identity theft.

Several dozen members showed up early this morning at U.S.C.- Aiken for a free seminar on identity theft.

The message was protect yourself.

Organizers say senior citizens are just as likely as anyone else to become a victim of identity theft.

That's why they were told to not carry their social security cards, reduce the amount of checks they write and most importantly, check their credit reports every year.

Because you never know when a criminal will target you.

It's not if you become a victim, but when you become a victim of identity theft. People are stealing your identity, your credit card numbers, social security numbers and your name and address," said Cindy Tesch of Consumer Credit Counseling.

Checking your credit report is so much easier than you think. Just go to https://www.annualcreditreport.com/.
