Martinez -- The much-anticipated and long-awaited iPhone has just gone on sale at stores around the country.

If you weren't one of the many who waited hours in line for one, you might want to be careful if you're trying to buy one on eBay or out of the classifieds.

Around 6PM Friday night, AT&T and Apple stores opened their doors to loads of people looking to get one of the most anticipated cell phones in history.

However, if you aren't getting it at one of these stores or directly from Apple or AT&T, you'll want to tread very carefully.

When it comes to getting an iPhone, it's the early bird that gets the worm.

And, many folks in front of the AT&T store on Washington Road put in their best effort to be the earliest bird.

"I've been here since 1:30 yesterday," said Tynor Holmes.

"I've been here since 2AM,” said Colin Colohan.

"I got here at 4:30PM yesterday," Terry Story said.

Some want the phone, but some are here for other reasons.

"I'm definitely keeping my phone," Tynor said.

"I'm not even getting one. I'm holding a spot for my friends," Colin said.

"Cause I have nothing else to do. I need a job I guess. That's what my mom tells me," Terry said.

Either way, no cell phone has ever generated the buzz that the iPhone has.

It's part cell phone, part iPod and part computer. It's unlike anything else.

But new technology like this can bring out the scammers. That's why if you didn't wait in line for one, you need to proceed with caution.

eBay already has a number of people trying to sell them for inflated prices. Many are legit, but many might not be. Make sure the seller accepts Paypal. If they require a money order, you might think twice.

If you see an ad for a price that is less than retail like one posted in the Washington Post, you may want to run away. There's a good chance it's a scam.

But if you can get your hands on one, know this; you'll be holding one of the most anticipated pieces of electronics of the year.

"It's the best thing. I'm an ‘it’ person, this is my ‘it’ for the year," said Tynor.
