Warrenville, SC--If you've ever surfed the Internet, you've surely seen ads for websites that claim they will pay you to take surveys.

It sounds so easy, fill out a few surveys and earn anywhere from 5 to 75 dollars each.

But it may not be all it's cracked up to be.

Mikel Pryor was just looking for something to do.

"I was just sitting at home and get bored," he said

Mikel is recovering from major foot surgery and he wanted to find a way to earn a little extra cash at home.

"I was on the web and found a banner that says survey scout and get paid to take surveys," he said.

It seemed easy enough, so he signed up and paid the nearly 35-bucks the site required to become a member.

"I read everything and all the fine print," he said.

So he began taking the surveys, trying to earn some money.

"They'll credit this money to this account, and they send you a check," he said.

But then he found out to earn his supposed cash or prize, he had to pay a membership fee with each company he just took the survey for.

"Every company is the same. Every survey I’ve seen is the same," he said.

12 On Your Side tried to contact Survey Scout for a comment, but we could not find a phone number or physical address on the website.

Consumer Reports says that lack of information should always raise a red flag, especially when your credit card information is required.

There are a lot of honest survey sites out there, but also plenty of less-than-scrupulous ones.

They have one thing in common; none of them will make you rich.

A lesson Mikel now knows.

"I'm definitely gonna do more research in everything I can possibly read," he said.

On Friday (May 11th) Mikel Pryor 12 On Your Side that Survey Scout did finally refund his money, which is several weeks after he first asked for it.

We should also add that Survey Scout has not been convicted of any crime or even accused of one in a court of law to our knowledge.

Remember, there are too many of these sites out there that will not charge you anything to take surveys.

Chances are, if you pay for a list of surveys, they'll be the same ones you can get elsewhere for free.
