Most of the time when you pay a security deposit, that money is returned to you.
But for one family a deposit was becoming permanent.
They asked 12 On Your Side's Ryan Duffy to go to work for them to track down their delayed deposit.
A security deposit is supposed to be returned right away at the end of a rental or lease contract...not eight months later.
For the last six years of his life, Sandra Keen's father Tullie Keen lived at Augusta Gardens assisted living facility.
But last October, an injury forced him to move out.
"We were busy caring for my father," Sandra says. "He moved to a more skilled nursing facility and we cared for my father."
Her father passed away in December, and Sandra says the family had lost track of the fact that Augusta Gardens never returned their $800 security deposit.
So they called and wrote a letter...with no success.
"The phone calls or the letter we left, don't understand why we never heard from them."
So after eight months waiting, Sandra called in 12 On Your Side.
Augusta Gardens says they didn't have an address to send the deposit...but the family lived at this address for the six years Mr. Keen was in their care.
And the address is also in the letter sent to Augusta Gardens in March.
And Sandra says Augusta Gardens had the right address when they were sending their bill every month for the last six years.
After Sandra got 12 on her side, she got her money.
"My sister and I are so pleased it was resolved so easily. We are so thankful to Channel 12 for getting this refund back. We can move on to better memories now instead of having to worry about financial issues."
Adding that $800 deposit to our 12 On Your Side total of money we've helped recover for our viewers, our new total is up to $182,450.
Augusta gardens says they had the check ready waiting on an address. But the family says they had their phone numbers and addresses for years.
