AUGUSTA, GA (WRDW)

"It was devastating because I mean whether the car was 20-years-old, 30-years-old that was my transportation," said Green.

Now she has to rely on others after she says her 92' Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Coupe was stolen. Green says it happened after she left the car along a stretch of Lumpkin Road after it broke down. She filed a police report.

"They had recovered my car and where it was," said Green. She said the thief sold her car to Pull-A-Part salvage yard on Sand Bar Ferry Road. "We asked what were their procedures. As far as taking a car, you need a bill of sale a registration or a title," said Green.

She also discovered how easy it may have been to sell her 22-year-old car. "Anybody can make up a bill of sales and bring it down there," said Green. A quick internet search pulls up sample bills of sales.

Pull-A-Part says on its website that, "cars twelve years or older only require one of the following items showing proof of ownership". A title, registration or bill of sale. Also a representative told us by phone that the bill of sale does not have to be notarized. "I just can't believe this. I just can't believe it," said Green.

Last year Georgia passed a bill that tightened restrictions on scrap metal sales including verification that a vehicle is not subject to any secured interest or lien before it can be sold.

But Green says it does nothing to protect her. "I just think that the law, it's not fair," said Green. For now she is hitching rides until she can gets some new wheels. "Try to piece some money, wait on my taxes. Try to purchase another car," said Green.

So if you have an older model car and it gets stolen you may end up finding it in a junkyard.
