AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW)--"I have been treated fantastically, I've had one or two problems," said Robert Taylor, retired Army veteran and VA volunteer. Overall though, Taylor said he has very few issues with the hospital, but admits 3 deaths at the facility from a lack of adequate medical care is troubling.

"That's serious. You can't wait three or five months to get something like that taken care of," said Taylor. Officials say Norwood's deaths stemmed from a backlog in cancer screenings.

Jacob Gadd heads up a task force from Washington D.C. that is evaluating the quality of health care provided to military veterans.

"Our country has an obligation to provide the finest healthcare for out veterans," said Gadd. Which officials admit did not happen at Charlie Norwood. Gadd is deputy director for health care for the American Legion in Washington. He is heading up a town hall meeting with veterans, medical officials and administrators in Augusta.

"If there are any concerns with their care, relay those with the VA medical center and we'll work to make sure those improvements are made," said Gadd.

Last month News 12 obtained documentation that a fourth patient may have died at Norwood. However when we reached out to hospital officials they would not confirm or deny if the additional death occurred there or not.

Meanwhile, Gadd and other officials are hoping the information obtained from this visit will lead to better medical care for veterans. "It's unacceptable that any veteran has to wait and there's delays in care and we want to learn firsthand with the veterans what happened," said Gadd.

Officials will conduct a site visit during the next two days.
they will take the information they get back with them to Washington, D.C.
