AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Almeda Weldon says she is sick of the congestion.

"No one wants to be ticketed or towed, so if you feel that it is OK to park in a particular area, they are gonna take that chance," says Weldon.

She says she is fed up though with not being able to park in front of her own home and says it all began two weeks ago when students began returning to classes at nearby GRU.

"It's extremely hard to drive down the street because cars are parked on both sides of the road," says Weldon.

She says it is illegal and a real hazard most days. Others say they are tired of the illegal parking in their neighborhood.

While News 12 was in the neighborhood, a Richmond County deputy wrote nearly a dozen tickets to drivers whose vehicles were parked in no parking zones and a couple of cars parked facing the wrong way.

Sgt. Shane McDaniel with the Sheriff's Office says officers have been monitoring the situation.

"Apparently a complaint came in regarding illegal parking, so the dispatchers notified a beat car," says McDaniel.

A GRU official told News 12 that there is adequate parking for students in reserved lots, however, if a student chooses to park for free on the street, the campus cannot be held liable for ticketing, towing or illegal parking as a result of that decision.

Meanwhile, News 12 is in contact with a maintenance official with the county to find out if those curbs along one side of those streets in question should be painted to indicate whether parking is allowed or not.
