12 OYS: Work-from-home job scam targets recent college graduate

News 12 at 6 o'clock / June 2, 2014

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- Angie Scott is a proud college graduate.

"Excited, I feel like I'm on top of the world," said Scott.

Hoping to land a job soon, Scott's been applying online and said a couple of days ago she found an administrative position with Humana Health and Wellness. The job promised great benefits and a salary between $32 and $67 an hour. Scott did not waste anytime applying.

"In less than 24 hours I had an e-mail telling me that I had been considered for an interview," said Scott. The e-mail claimed to be from a Michelle Koch.

Scott was told she needed to pay $400 to cover the cost of computer software for the work-from-home job. But first Scott was instructed to create an instant messenger account to continue the hiring process.

"The minute I set up the account and my messenger showed I was available, there they were instantly, said Scott. Also, just as quickly, Scott said she grew suspicious. "I felt kind of off about it," said Scott.

While continuing to reply to the instant messages, Scott said she was also doing a Google search on the name Michelle Koch and the word scam.

The first think I see is her LinkedIn profile, and there's a disclaimer at the beginning of the profile that states, if you get something saying it came from her, it did not come from her," said Scott. It was all the confirmation Scott needed to know it was in fact a scam.

Scott said she sent a final message letting the con artists know she had figured out their game. While Scott can laugh about the whole thing, she is also giving some advice for other folks who may be desperate to find work.

"You have to do your homework. Interview 101. You need to know about the company your interviewing with," said Scott.
