12 OYS: Won a civil money judgment? Don't get excited just yet

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- "I like to get in my car and come home and lay down because my body is not in the shape like it used to be," said Gregory Stanley.

Something Stanley said he will not be able to do after the vehicle he bought from a local car lot had engine problems. "After I got the car, the engine light came on and so by the engine light coming on I said well this thing ain't gonna last a year," said Stanley.

He said he tried to get the car lot to repair his 2005 Chevy Malibu before his 30 day warranty ran out and he would be on his own, " said Stanley. "They told me to come back, I came back they was closed. They told me to come back, I came back, they said the electrician wasn't there," said Stanley.

He decided to take the company to court earlier this month he won a judgment for $3,600. But said he has not been paid. Stanley said the court suggested he investigate.

"Find out what bank he bank at or where he work at. Why I gotta go through all this here," said Stanley. He said he could file in court for a judgment lien but that would cost more money.

Before doing that though, legal experts we talked to suggested taking steps on your own first. Like simply asking for your money, or agreeing to settle for less. If all fails, they suggest hiring a collection professional who would be paid a percentage of the recovered funds.

Despite winning a judgment, Stanley said now without a car or his money he is not sure what he will do to get around. "Tryna get me a car, tryna get to Bible study and stuff like that," said Stanley.

He said to make everything whole again the judgment ordered him to return that car to the company.
