12 OYS: Rats defecate, wreak havoc inside storage unit, says family

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW) -- Audrey and John Brannon are excited building a home together.

In September, they rented a unit at A-Tech storage on Augusta Tech Road in Augusta.

"[We decided to store] our furnishings, our bed mattresses, sofas sofa sleepers," Brannon said

They thought it was a good decision until they returned to check on their belongings last month.

"Everywhere you go there are dead rats," said Brannon. "Rat feces, mice urine, rat urine. Our furniture eaten up."

The Brannon's said the rodents caused $2,500 in damage. Their rental agreement does not provide insurance coverage, and neither does their personal insurance company. At least not for rats.

"A-Tech storage, they moved everyone that was affected," Brannon said

While its appreciated, the Brannon's feel A-Tech should do more.

"If they could at least reimburse us at least half, or if the owner would at least speak with us and apologize," Brannon said

On Your Side both, called and emailed to see if the company would consider the Brannon's request. We have not heard back yet. On Friday they went to check on what items were not ruined by the rats.

"Everything was fine. No signs of rat droppings or anything," said John Brannon.

"The house is almost finished. In its building process so we will be moving. I just don't want to take any rats with me," Brannon said

The Brannon's said they were told the rodent problem stemmed from food that may have been left in a nearby storage unit.

So what do you do if insurance does not cover for rodents? Find out if the company treats for rodents before you sign any agreement. Even get the name of the exterminator and verify. The easiest way is to just look for rodent stations around the facility.
