12 On Your Side: Do I need flood insurance?

NORTH AUGUSTA, S.C. (WRDW) -- Storms soaked the area Sunday night, leaving people to clean up the damage Monday. The Grove Apartments in North Augusta flooded, and now, many who are left with waterlogged homes are wondering if they are covered.

Jacob Limchig woke up early Monday morning to find a mess outside. He says he walked outside to find his car sitting in what looked like a river.

His neighbor, George Miller, had a similar story.

"I came out and looked, and my car was maybe a foot deep in water," Miller said.

But these are stories from the lucky ones at The Grove. Unlike their neighbors, their apartments were spared from the flooding.

"We're lucky we didn't get any water in the house because we don't have flood insurance," Limchig said.

Renters at the complex are required to have rental insurance, but flood insurance isn't included in that.

"There's a lot of people who don't have money to replace most of the stuff they lost," Limchig said.

Pam Tucker with Columbia County EMA deals with disasters like flooding all the time. She says many people are surprised to find out their policy doesn't cover flooding.

"Your regular homeowner's policy will not cover flood," Tucker said.

You have to purchase a separate flood policy, which Miller says isn't something a lot of people out at The Groves have.

"I don't think people really think about it until it happens, and then it's too late," Miller said.

But a lot of people at The Groves are wishing they had thought about purchasing the policy earlier.

"I don't have money to replace everything that's messed up, like my car," Limchig said.

Experts say to learn from others' mistakes and think about getting flood insurance before it's too late.

"Consider it. For a couple hundred dollars a year, that's a lot of peace of mind," Tucker said.
