AIKEN -- A new list of the most popular cars to steal in both the Peach State and the Palmetto State are topped by a pair of Hondas, the 1995 Accord in South Carolina and the 1994 Accord in Georgia.
But even if your car isn't on the list, it may not be safe.
A new study says car thefts in South Carolina are on the rise, but in Georgia and nationally, the numbers are down.
So what do you do to keep your Sedan from being swiped or your truck taken? Be a little more careful with it.
Aiken's X-Treme Audio can put in just about anything you want into your car, including something that will help keep your car yours: an alarm.
"Most thieves will go after the easy target. If they experience an alarm, that's one more thing they have to deal with that will draw attention to themselves," Owner Nicholas Swearingen said.
Nicholas is one of his own customers. He has an alarm on his truck that even comes with a remote that will alert him if someone is messing with his truck.
"Just protection, it gives me an advantage over a factory alarm," Nicholas said.
That protection can cost you. Many alarms can range from $150 to maybe even hundreds more.
However, you don't have to spend several hundred dollars just to make sure your car doesn't get stolen. There are things you can do that are absolutely free. Like parking in a well-lit area, locking the door, and don't forget to grab the keys.
That's especially important advice for those of you with cars on these lists:

2. 1999 Chevrolet Full Size C/K 1500 Pickup
3. 1996 Ford Explorer

5. 2000 Honda Civic
6. 1999 Ford Taurus
7. 1987 Chevrolet Caprice

2006 Most Stolen Vehicles in Georgia:

Those are the most stolen cars in South Carolina and Georgia. That means you may want to take extra care if you have one.
If you don't, you could be putting your car at risk and that could end up hurting other drivers in the wallet.
"We're paying for those cars that were stolen through insurance rates. Whether it's State Farm or whether it's some other company," State Farm Agent Don Robinson said.
