KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — U.S.-led coalition forces fighting militants in Afghanistan have released new data they claim as evidence that violence is trending downward in their favor.

However, the United Nations released its own report a day earlier saying that the monthly average of violence was significantly higher than last year. The U.N. compiled data different to that of NATO.

The Western military alliance said Thursday that the number of attacks initiated by militants from January through August was 2 percent lower than the same period last year.

Although NATO says insurgent-inspired attacks are down from last year, the coalition says roadside bombings and civilian casualties, including those caused by coalition airstrikes, are up.
